The Namita Rose, the first Pelena Express vessel, was launched at Urunga last week, setting sail for Solomon Islands where it will serve as a ferry to remote islands.
Namita Rose can operate in water as shallow as 40 centimetres, enabling it to access villages without wharves or jetties. Although it runs on diesel fuel, it is also capable of running on coconut oil as fuel. This will decrease running costs in a country where diesel is very expensive, provide a market for a secondary coconut oil industry, and contribute to the environment.
Local media have reported the story, including the Bellingen Courier-Sun.
