Pelena is an Australian engineering company based in Dorrigo, in northern NSW, Australia. We specialize in remote energy systems and in particular the Pelena Micro-Hydro Turbine. 

In Australia, our Hydro systems provide 240 volt power 24/7 and sell power back to the national grid.

Since 1998, we have exported from Australia to customers mainly in the Solomon Islands where rural electric power is almost entirely diesel generated.  Our hydro electric turbines allow small communities of a few hundred people to harness small rivers to generate electricity and power domestic applications and small industries including coolrooms for fish and copra drying and coconut oil production.

Able to generate up to 250kW of power, the Pelena Hydro Turbine is opening up jobs and opportunities for thousands of rural Solomon Islanders right now. 

In Solomon Islands, Pelena systems are providing electricity for domestic and industrial applications in remote communities, bringing modern appliances, development and jobs to thousands of people.  

We are currently developing a coconut oil powered diesel motor for boats and a solar home lighting kit.

Pelena’s founding Directors, Peter Lynch and Salena Bryce , have a combined 35 years experience of working on energy systems in some of the remotest communities on Earth.

They found projects were being compromised by suppliers unwilling to provide backup, even parts, in remote locations.  Where was the customer support for their products?  Where were the operation and maintenance manuals – manuals which were truly useable with lots of pictures and clear text?  Where was access to affordable and standardized spare parts?  

Pelena is currently developing and trialling a number of technologies for remote area application.  However, the main focus at present is in hydroelectric turbines and hydroelectric systems. 

Pelena’s approach is to standardize products as much as possible.  However, we strongly believe that nothing is static.  We expect and encourage that the technology that keeps the Pelena Turbines turning will change and develop in time.  We expect to learn and develop better ways of, for example, delivering better operation and maintenance manuals.  If we took a different approach, we would not have had the successes we have had.
